Zia Olla

(Item: ZIAOLLA)
Zia Pueblo Pottery Olla

Very unusual late 19th or early 20th century Zia Pueblo Storage Jar. This pot is virtually identical to one in the Nelson Rockefeller collection, but smaller. This one measures 9 ½” in diameter and is 8” tall. It has a very elegant shape and well patinated surface and is rare by virtue of its lack of decoration, which categorizes this piece as one made for indigenous use and not for sale to tourists. Hand coiled construction, it is slip decorated from the shoulder down, with a ¾” band of unpolished slip with a stone polished surface below that giving it 3 colors in a reddish palate. There is a tiny chip at the rim and some flaking of the slip at the very bottom.
