Germantown Squares - Group of 5

(Item: GTOWN-5)
Germantown refers to a type of commercially made yarn that was given to the Navajo starting around 1885, (although some vegetally dyed yarns pre-date this). The weavers who were capable of weaving the fine blankets were frustrated by the coarse yarns spun from the sheep that the US Government made available to them at this time. Due to the cost of the yarns, only the most facile weavers were allowed to use these materials. Consequently, they produced what have proven to be the most prized weavings of that period. The prices, sizes and condition are as follows, but not necessarily in the same order:

The Square with the reciprocal border is 21" square, has a couple of tiny dings, but otherwise fine with a leathery handle, very compact weave, selvedge cords, $950.00

The one on the loom that has a batten stick with sort of an eyedazzler design, has some moth damage (pictured), measures 17" x 11", $595.00

The one on the loom that has a red background, yellow and white star designs, nice weave, has some moth damage (pictured), measures 12" x 13", $550.00

The "double" square with the busy design, looped multi-colored fringe, nice condition, 35" x 19", SOLD

The "double" square with the white background, nice condition, 19' x 40", $495.00
