Herter Brother's Secretary
Gustave Herter and his brother Christian were the leading cabinet makers & interior decorators in New York City in the late 19th Century. The brothers made furniture for the Vanderbilts, The Morgans and the Goulds. Pieces made by Herter Brothers have been on display in the Metropolitan Musuem of Art in New York as well as the Houston Museum of Fine Art.
This secretary is not signed but has been deemed Herter Brothers by Butterfields. The piece features black laquer and and a marquetry front panel as well as carved detailing and original brass fitings. The mirror is original, the desk locks and the key still exhists. There is some loss of laquer on the shelf below the mirror. It measures 67" high, 43" wide and 14" deep.
