Scholastic Roundup: For the PSAL, a day of outdoor track and field (2025)

It is in Little Hell Gate, Salt Marsh, Manhattan. Perhaps you have heard of Ichan Stadium – the site of this year’s Public Schools Athletic League Day of Weights.

The Outdoor Track and Field Day of Events – contested earlier this month – consisted of a multi-event scoring competition. Athletes competed in three throwing events:

  • Triathlon Discus
  • Javelin
  • Shot Put

And points were awarded based on performance in each event from I.A.A.F. tables. The running events contested were the:

  • Steeplechase
  • 400m Hurdles
  • 100HH
  • 110HH
  • 800m

Five hundred sixty-three student athletes attended the festive meet, with the Borough and City Championship qualifying times and marks.

The afternoon was highlighted by:

  • Kayliegh Asquith (DeWitt Clinton) – captured the Girls Triathlon with a score of 1,225 (Discus 22.10m, Javelin 21.48m, Shot Put 10.97m
  • Chang Henry Mayner (High School of American Studies) placed first in the Boys Triathlon scoring 929 points (Javelin 38.69m, Discus 32.08m, Shot Put 10.73m)
  • Nicholas Sealey (Harry S. Truman) blazed to a New York State No. 2 time of 14.85 in the boys 110m Hurdles
  • Shyenne Blake (DeWitt Clinton) won the 100m Hurdles with a time of 15.71.
  • Emma Baltrusaitis (Hunter) won the 800m, 2:30.96.
  • Nathanael Hansen (Bayside) cruised in the 800m, 2:03.80.
  • Ariel Yaron (Fiorello LaGuardia) captured the boys Steeplechase (water) with a time of 10:03.74.
  • Saffa Ellis (George Westinghouse) won the girls Steeplechase (water) with a time of 7:35.48.

Neil Harrow, most recently the Associate Head Coach at James Madison University (2022-2025) is the new Women’s Basketball Coach at Long Island University. He briefly left JMU in the summer of 2024 to join the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks as an assistant Coach where he worked with four Olympians and one WNBA All-Star.

A native of East Kilbride, Scotland, Harrow earned a master’s degree in education leadership from Valdosta State in 2015. He earned a bachelor’s degree in 2010 from the University of the West of Scotland, where he was also inducted into the school’s athletic Hall of Fame.

He is a servant leader who impacts winning with his outstanding basketball IQ and ability to connect and establish relationships with his players. Neil will be a fantastic addition to the athletic department, University, and the local community,” Curt Miller, EVP & GM of the Dallas Wings wrote in a statement.

Sophomore Payton Walker is hitting .526 for the St. Joseph’s University women’s softball team – she has a .602 on-base percentage – ranking second in the Skyline Conference and 12th and seventh nationally in those respective categories. She also tops the conference in slugging percentage (.987), home runs (5), RBI (48), and total bases (77).

For the second week in-a-row, and third-time in four weeks, the Eastvale, Calif. resident was named the Skyline Conference Player of the Week. Her 12 combined RBI last Friday afternoon against Sarah Lawrence, pushed her season total to 48, surpassing the previous single-season program record that had stood since 2007. The Bears have won 17 of their first 26 ballgames.

The Pratt Institute men’s tennis team finished its regular season with a dominant 7-0 sweep of Marywood University in Atlantic East Conference action last Thursday. Pratt took early control of the match by claiming all three doubles matches. Justin Urbi and Mikah Liu teamed-up at No. 1 doubles for a decisive 6-1 win. Calder Tillinghast and John Cherry matched that performance at No. 2 doubles, also winning 6-1, while Nathan Park and Johnny Xie secured another 6-1 victory at No. 3. With the victory – their third in-a-row – Pratt improved to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The Cannoneers face No. 3-seeded Neumann University in the AEC divisional semifinals, Friday (April 25th).

Pratt’s women’s tennis team ended their regular season nipping Baruch College 4-3 in a non-conference matchup, Saturday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. They improved their overall season record to 12-2, finishing the season on a six-match winning streak.

Closing out their regular season on Senior Day, the Brooklyn College men’s tennis team dropped a 5-2 non-conference decision to the United States Marchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Monday. Brooklyn heads into the upcoming CUNYAC Championship Tournament with a 5-7 overall record.

The LIU men’s lacrosse team rolled past LeMoyne, 13-6 on Senior Day, to secure its ninth win of the season and close-out the regular season home schedule, Saturday afternoon.

Ben McIsaac and Cameron Connolly each finished the game with three goals and an assist. Owen Stefanko registered a five-point outing with a goal and four assists. Aidan Zuhoski added a hat-trick, and Charlie Hunnewell contributed a pair of assists in the win. Ryan Fountain led the team with four ground balls. Goalie Tyler Gresh made nine saves top earn his second win of the season.

Seniors Ryan Baudo, Nick Colantonio, Nick Kasica, Austin McMahon, Mike Murro, Sean Plasencia, Ryan Quinn, Khairi Sears, and AJ Volkman were honored during a pregame Senior Day ceremony.
The Northeast Conference Tournament begins May 1st.

Erin Harkins was the overtime hero for LIU in the Sharks’ 11-10 comeback win over Saint Francis (Pa.), Saturday afternoon. She scored the game-winning goal off a free position shot 1:09 into overtime to lift the Sharks’ women’s lacrosse team to victory. Julia Trainor, who finished with five points – two goals, three assists – scored her second goal of the game with 7:07 left in regulation. Ava Taylor tied the game at eight with 5:30 remaining in the fourth quarter, before Pierson Schuchart netted her third goal of the day to give LIU a 10-9 lead with just over two minutes to play.

Saint Francis answered with the equalizer with 15 seconds left in regulation, forcing overtime.
Harkins capped her three-point afternoon — two goals, one assist – with the decisive goal to improve LIU to 7-1 in NEC play and 9-6 overall.

Seniors Ava Burns, Samantha Dickerson, Emma Gonsowski, Alicia Inkeles, Ryan McAllister, Mylie Norton, Stella Reshetiloff, Pierson Schuchart, and Ava Taylor were honored in a pregame Senior Day ceremony.

LIU’s women’s softball team, hold a two-game lead over Fairleigh Dickinson University and Central Connecticut State University with this – the last weekend in the regular season.

The Sharks (21-19, 14-4, NEC) downed Wagner College Saturday afternoon in Staten Island.
Sophia Mariottini (7-7) earned the win in the circle, allowing just two runs on nine hits, no walks and four strikeouts in seven innings.

Medgar Evers University freshman defensive specialist Shabbir Ahmed was named the winner of the City University of New York Athletic Conference Sportsmanship Award. He was one of only five Cougars to appear in 16 matches or more. During the 2025 season, he was a terrific defensive presence, leading the squad with a total of 45 digs.
